Studio 1851 – Photography Exhibition
February 1–March 2, 2025, Satakunta Museum, Parvi
In February, Satakunta Museum will host a photography exhibition by Studio 1851, based in Pori. Studio 1851 specializes in historical photographic techniques. The exhibition features photographs created using the over 160-year-old wet plate collodion method.
The exhibition showcases impressive portraits and landscape photographs from Satakunta, captured between 2015 and 2025. These photographs take the viewer on a time-travel journey, offering a perspective of the past through a contemporary lens. The photos were taken with an old plate camera and developed by hand, making each image completely unique.
The photographs were created using the wet plate collodion method, which was developed in 1851. The process involves shooting with an antique plate camera, and the images are developed immediately on-site on aluminum or glass plates. This gives each image its own distinctive character. The hand-crafted development process and the precise application of chemicals create the signature look of wet plate photographs, such as the wavy, rough edges of the plate. The technique’s precision and aesthetics transform the photographs into works of art that highlight the history and charm of photography.
The exhibition produced by Studio 1851 offers an opportunity to explore traditional photographic techniques and the contemporary perspectives they reveal.
